D-Day: Getting Ashore

The race is on at Pont du Hoc. German defenders come out of their bunkers at the OP bunker warning.

Taking a run down the trench system the opposite way they assumed they'd have to move...

 Setting up for all-round-defence...
 Flak gun in ground role...
Rangers race to the cliff face...
...and set up the rope projectors...
Due to drift, some men are separated from the main group.
Meanwhile, supporting DD's fight unequal odds to stay in the game...take a dink...
Second wave and some craft meet withering fire...
 ...some armour lands virtually unmolested...
and some LCVP's have initial good luck...
 And up it goes...
 ...another heavy damage...
 Infantry go like the clappers..
 Third wave mixes with second...
...it's all about getting to cover and fire positions...
 Traffic build up coming in...
 A broader view.
 Sherman takes out pill box.
DF increases in density...Germans had more 'off table' than realised at first so, down it all came at once...

'Look, you can see their reference books from up here'
First of the Rangers make it up the cliff...German fire not yet effective...

It's been a fair old jog for the Germans.

More next week.
